Frequently Asked Questions

When is it time to have my rolls exchanged or sharpened?

Here are things to look for:
    1. Low motor amps and reduced capacity. Instead of it taking six hours to                        process it may take eight hours.
    2. Poor feed quality. The rolls will be doing more
crushing than grinding, resulting in excessive
        powdering.
How long can I expect my rolls to go in between changes?

   Factors to consider:
    1. Do you have the proper protection, such as a magnet or scalper system?
    2. Is the machine you are using the correct size for your application?
Typically, Roll life is primarily dependent on bushels ran compared to the                      size of the machine. Rolls should last at least two years between
sharpening. Less than that and you are paying too much for service calls,
bearing replacement, downtime and possible overtime. You WILL save
money, by trading up for a larger Mill!

How long between requesting a Roll Change from RMS, will  I       have to wait for RMS to come to my facility?

   Depends on:
    1. If it is an emergency, we can be there immediately.
    2. If it is not an emergency, we could be there as early as 2-3 days.
    3. If you prefer to split the cost of travel expenses, we can try to group you in             with a trip with other customers in the same area, this will save you money.

If RMS comes to my facility to change out the rolls, how long            will  this take?

Generally, within 8 hours. These 8 hours can be split between two days, if
needed. We work around your schedule.

 What is your service area?

Presently, we service from Wyoming to Ohio, and North Dakota to
Oklahoma. However, we are always expanding our service area to meet the
  needs of our customers!

What happens if I have a breakdown and need service
     immediately?

RMS has 4 service trucks and an experienced crew available to get you up
and running in the most expedient manner possible. Usually 12-24 hours.

Please contact Dave Huff at 605-498-1383 or Rob O at 605-498-1386 for immediate assistance.

If I want my rolls sharpened at RMS'S facility, how long will it     take?

If an appointment is made and the rolls are in our shop by 7-8am, typically
we will have you on the road again by late afternoon the same day. We
stock all replacement parts you may require.

What is the advantage of being in RMS'S roll exchange                     program?

RMS will provide appropriately sized rolls, for you as long as you own your
mill. With this program there is no need for our customers to have an extra set
of rolls lying around, not making them any money.

What is the largest Chilled Cast Iron or hardened steel Rolls           RMS manufacture?

        Cast Iron Rolls: 24 x 72
Steel Rolls :18 diameter and 60 long hardened steel rolls.  All of
these rolls have removable shafts for easy shaft replacement. RMS always
likes a challenge; therefore, we are able to do custom work for you if the
above parameters do not meet your needs.

How do I know if a bearing is going out?

     1. Excessive vibration
     2. The bearing in question is excessively hotter than the other bearings on the              machine.

How do I know if a bearing is running hotter than the rest?

RMS Temperature Gun

The RMS temperature gun is a non-contact-thermometer, which can be used to detect a bearing that is running hotter than the rest. This enables you to determine problems before they become emergencies.

My machine is starting to vibrate and making unusual noise, what could be the cause of that?

If you have an RMS machine:
    1. Possible bearing failure
    2. Possible shaft surface failure

If you do not have an RMS machine:
    1. Possible bearing failure
    2. Possible shaft surface failure
    3. Possible Idler bearing failure

What if my current machine is not meeting our companies needs?
We offer the following rebuild services:

  • On site conversion of your roller mill to a roller-grinder
  • Complete factory rebuild and conversion of your roller mill to a roller-grinder
If you have not yet purchased a new roller-grinder, consider having RMS convert your existing mill into a roller-grinder. We can guarantee the same capacity and the same micron size as you would get with a new mill of comparable size, with a savings of up to 75% of the cost of a new mill.
Is your roller-grinder not quite keeping up? Upgrade your present roskamp and save up to 75% of the cost of a new mill. With our Dual Motor drive system, we can guarantee a capacity increase of at least 20% more than what your mill is presently producing.

What if I do not have an RMS machine?
With over 20 years experience in the feed mill service industry, RMS has  serviced all brands and sizes of machines. In addition, we are able to make rolls for any size or brand of roller mill or roller grinder.

Why is my ground corn quality poor?

Could be one of the following reasons:
    1. Mill is out of adjustment
    2. Dull Rolls
    3. Improper spring tension
    4. Wore roll position parts
    5. Could be the corn itself. It could be over dried or a hybrid with poor
        grinding characteristics.

Why am I getting whole kernel corn?

Could be one of the following reasons:
    1. The V-block is wore out
    2. Dull rolls, causing the corn to piling up on the rolls.

What are some of the advantages of having a roller mill versus a hammer mill?

  • Roller mills require less energy per ton processed.
  • Quieter Operation.
  • Dust Free.
  • Better feed efficiency.
  • Roller mills are able to reduce materials to a uniform particle size, which allows for more control of product characteristics and thus reduces waste. This means less ultra fine particles, which are a common occurrence in the use of hammer mills.
  • A better standard deviation.
  • Improved flow ability through augers and bins.
  • Allows for greater nutrient digestibility.
  • Fewer ultra fine particles equates to fewer digestive problems.
  • Roller mills energy efficiency is estimated to processes at least 40% more material than a hammer mill system, at a particular horsepower.
  • Flexibility to grind products for feed that is mashed or pelletized.
  • Flexibility to grind different kinds of grain and micron sizes with ease.
  • Easy to maintain and service, which means less down time saving you money.
